About Shattuck Seventh-day Adventist Church

The Shattuck Seventh-day Adventist Church was organized in 1901 by Elder G. F. Haffner. As a Russian-German church of largely immigrants, the first meeting place was at the Kahoe School House three (3) miles south and one half (1/2) mile west of Shattuck. The charter members had migrated from Lehigh, Kansas to file homesteads in Western Oklahoma. Two of their distinct Christian Bible beliefs are in the name. They keep the seventh-day Sabbath and look expectantly for the second advent of Jesus Christ. That “God is love“ is the foundational primis of Adventism.

Adventists believe home is to be a little heaven upon earth. Salvation is first taught in the home. Seventh-day Adventists place high value on Christian education; believing parochial education begins in the home and continues through eternity. A child’s first teacher is their parents. Christian values are taught by parents to a child. As a child matures, their formal education builds on the values learned at home continuing in church provided education. The school of the 1901 organized church was too small after other settlers arrived, so in 1903, a church was built five (5) miles south and one half (1/2) mile east of Shattuck. In 1904 an addition was built to accommodate the increased membership and to serve as a church school. The first year there were approximately 40 students. Taking the gospel commission literally, many of the students became foreign missionaries, ministers, Christian teachers, medical doctors, nurses and Bible instructors of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The church grew to approximately 200 members. In 1906 some of the members living in town organized the second church.

In 1910 to 1911 a new school house and teacher’s home was built five (5) miles south of Shattuck. In 1929 the country church was torn down and a new church built on the same location. The school and the teacher’s home were sold to help finance the new church.

When there was a visiting minister, the country church would go to town for worship. Because of this inconvenience and the lack of facilities for the children, it was decided to unite the country and town churches. A combined church business meeting was held in 1939, and it was voted to unite and build a new church at the corner of Fourth and Santa Fe Streets in Shattuck.

Another church school was built in 1949 at 511 S. Summer St.  The Shattuck Seventh-day Adventist Church operated this 10-grade educational facility for years. Many Saturday nights it served as a recreational center for the church youth and their friends in the community. The church operated a “Dorcus Society” clothing ministry out of the Shattuck Junior Academy providing free clothing to those in need.

In the 1970s the Shattuck Junior Academy ceased operation as a parochial educational facility and has been repurposed as the Ellis County Food Bank and a Fellowship Hall for the Shattuck Seventh-day Adventist Church.

The Shattuck District pastor is now Pastor Dominick Alipoon, is now shared with the Woodward, Alva and Cherokee churches.

You’re invited to come join this friendly congregation for worship as together they share the love of God in their families and community; proclaiming the soon return of Jesus.

We wish to give a special appreciation to the book A PIONEER HISTORY OF SHATTUCK, copy right 1970, page 321 for some of these exerts.

Pastor Ben Burkhardt

Pastor - Shattuck Seventh-day Adventist Church

Pastor Ben has been active in ministry since he gave his life to Jesus in Spring of 2003. Growing up near the Sierra-Nevada mountains of Northern CA, he began attending church and sharing Jesus after being inspired by loving and lovable Christians to know Jesus. He picked up his Bible, began reading it, and was converted by the teachings of Jesus. This daily encounter with Jesus and His word became an instant and continuous habit.

Ben's passion for Jesus led him to travel the world, sharing the gospel! He has done mission work in over ten countries, preaching, teaching, giving Bible studies, and helping with practical needs. He has a Masters of Ministry in Church Leadership, undergrad training and certificates in Bible teaching, and most importantly believes firmly in sitting at the feet of the true Master, Jesus. His wife Shiela and daughter Bethany share his passion for Jesus and join him fully in the work of reaching souls for the Kingdom of God!
